Planning Engineer, River Engineering - AMENDMENT

As an experienced hydrotechnical engineer on the River Engineering team, you will apply and further develop your hydrotechnical, geotechnical, and civil engineering skills by leading and participating in a variety of projects supporting asset management, river flood resilience, environmental sustainability, and regulatory compliance. You will have a focus on dam safety, river infrastructure design, review, and inspection and emergency response. Primary duties include:
- Conduct technical work supporting implementation of The City's Dam Safety Program, including providing technical input on third-party dam safety reviews and preparation of emergency preparedness and response plans.
- Technical work supporting asset management of river and creek infrastructure including dams, flood barriers, riverbank stabilization works, and fish habitat facilities, including inspections and condition assessments, reviewing records, and hydrotechnical, hydrogeological or geotechnical analyses.
- Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for Calgary's rivers and creeks, including frequency analyses, flow duration curves, and HEC-RAS modelling.
- Review land development applications, assessing dam safety risks, flood risk, groundwater, riparian health, channel stability, and climate change impacts.
- Participate in the River Engineering Team's watershed monitoring and forecasting program, serving as a Forecaster-on-Duty on a rotating basis to monitor flood, drought and ice-jam risks.
- Contribute to annual flood preparedness and emergency response activities.
- Collaborate with other City teams, engaging with Calgarians, the insurance industry, consultants, academics and others, to deliver programs.
Qualifications
- A degree in Civil, or Civil (Water Resources) Engineering and at least 4 years of relevant professional engineering experience in hydrotechnical or water resources engineering obtained after receiving your P. Eng. designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work. - A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) and access to a personal vehicle for business use OR the ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit is required.
- Experience in hydrologic analyses, hydraulic modelling (HEC-RAS), and dam safety, including familiarity with CDA Guidance and Alberta Dam Safety Regulatory Frameworks is required.
- A graduate degree in a related field is an asset.
- Experience in dam design, construction, operation, surveillance and maintenance, and dam safety compliance for large concrete dams and/or small earthen dams, is an asset.
- Experience in Asset Management for traditional and/or natural infrastructure is an asset.
- Familiarity with stormwater management modelling platforms (SWMM) is an asset.
- Familiarity with GIS/ArcGISPro is an asset.
- To succeed in this role, the candidate must have a proven initiative to tackle new tasks, a commitment to professional excellence, and strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Working Conditions: Ability to work periodically on evenings or weekends for monitoring. Potentially long day- or night- shifts during an emergency response may be infrequently required.

Compensation: Level P3E $115,464 - 144,330 per annum
Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week.
Days of work: This position works a 5 day work week earning 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.
